Cambodia’s Supreme Court on Friday upheld the incitement conviction of prominent opposition politician Rong Chhun in a ruling that is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s political landscape. While the court suspended the remainder of his prison sentence, the decision effectively sidelines the veteran political figure from active politics for several years.
Rong Chhun, who serves as a senior adviser to the Nation Power Party, was originally convicted last year on charges of inciting social unrest. The allegations stemmed from his meetings with villagers who had reportedly been displaced by government-backed construction projects. The case attracted widespread attention and criticism from opposition supporters and rights advocates who viewed it as part of a broader crackdown on dissent.
Under the Supreme Court’s final ruling, Rong Chhun will be prohibited from participating in political activities for the next five years. The restrictions include a ban on voting, running for public office, and engaging in political campaigns. In addition, he has been barred from traveling abroad for three years, covering the remainder of his original four-year sentence.
Supporters gathered outside the Supreme Court complex in Phnom Penh reacted angrily to the verdict, expressing disappointment over the decision. Many believe the case reflects growing pressure on opposition figures in Cambodia under the administration of Prime Minister Hun Manet.
Despite the court’s decision, Rong Chhun remains free as the remainder of his prison sentence has been suspended. His lawyer, Em Chantha, confirmed that the ruling is final under Cambodian law and cannot be appealed through the judicial system.
However, Rong Chhun indicated that he and his legal team would carefully review the court's judgment to determine whether there is an opportunity to seek a royal pardon from King Norodom Sihamoni. Such a move could potentially offer him relief from some of the restrictions imposed by the court.
The ruling marks another significant chapter in Cambodia’s political environment, where opposition figures continue to face legal challenges. Observers say the decision is likely to fuel further debate about political freedoms, judicial independence, and democratic participation in the country.
