Can Tho Adopts Dual System for Grade 10 Admissions

Can Tho Adopts Dual System for Grade 10 Admissions

Post by : Shakul

More than 45,200 ninth-grade students have registered for the 2026-2027 high school admission process in Can Tho as the city introduces a new dual admission model combining entrance examinations and academic record-based selection. Education officials believe the approach will help reduce examination pressure while ensuring fair access to secondary education.

According to the Can Tho Department of Education and Training, a total of 45,231 junior high school graduates are eligible for Grade 10 admission this year. The city has continued its digital transformation efforts by using a centralized enrollment platform that manages registration, admissions processing, and result announcements through an integrated online system.

The most significant change in this year's admission cycle is the simultaneous use of two enrollment methods. Under the new framework, 59 high schools will conduct entrance examinations with a combined enrollment target of 23,120 students. Meanwhile, 32 schools will admit students based on academic performance records, offering a total of 9,184 places.

Officials said the schools using academic record-based admissions are generally located in areas where the number of graduating students closely matches available enrollment capacity. In such cases, holding competitive entrance examinations would provide limited benefits while creating additional pressure for students and families.

Deputy Director of the Can Tho Department of Education and Training, Danh Hoang Nguyen, explained that the selection-based admission model reflects local educational realities and supports broader goals of reducing social costs and ensuring students can continue their education after completing junior high school. Authorities believe the system creates a more balanced and student-friendly admissions process.

For schools facing significantly higher demand than available seats, particularly in urban and densely populated districts, entrance examinations remain the preferred method. Education officials stated that competitive testing helps maintain transparency, fairness, and objectivity while allowing schools to select students who best meet academic requirements.

To ensure the smooth conduct of the admissions process, the department has established 90 examination boards across the city. More than 450 administrators, teachers, and information technology personnel have received specialized training on the digital examination management system. Authorities confirmed that preparations involving examination papers, logistics, security arrangements, transportation, facilities, and technical infrastructure have been completed in accordance with national regulations.
