Canada has voiced serious apprehensions regarding escalating tensions in the Middle East, cautioning that these conflicts are now jeopardizing global security and trade dynamics.
In an interview with Qatar News Agency during his visit to Doha, David McGuinty emphasized that Canada is attentively monitoring the evolving situation, with particular concern for the well-being of individuals residing in the Gulf, including Qatar.
McGuinty referred to this moment as “a critical juncture” and advocated for urgent de-escalation and a durable resolution to the ongoing hostilities. He expressed hope that collective international efforts would aid in restoring regional stability.
He highlighted the crisis’ effects extending beyond local dimensions, significantly influencing the global economy. Key disruptions in oil supply chains, shipping activities, and market conditions were noted.
McGuinty also warned that restrictions on maritime transport are adversely impacting food production as well as fertilizer supply chains globally, leading to inflationary pressures and price increases in various nations.
Canada is currently deliberating potential support measures with global allies in three critical areas: maritime operations, demining initiatives, and intelligence aid. This could involve deploying vessels to oversee the situation and offering technological and space-based resources.
He indicated that should a stable ceasefire be established, Canada would collaborate with international partners to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains a secure international passage.
During the session, McGuinty commended Qatar’s proactive approach in facilitating regional dialogues, noting Doha's essential role in mediation efforts.
Additionally, he acknowledged the strengthening ties between Canada and Qatar, stating his Doha visit signifies a mutual interest in enhancing cooperation across areas like defense, AI, quantum computing, cryptography, and engineering research.
McGuinty warned that the present crisis is already impacting global air travel and amplifying inflationary challenges worldwide, underscoring the need for international collaboration to stave off further instability.
He mentioned ongoing multilateral efforts spearheaded by France and the UK, involving around 50 nations focused on ensuring maritime security and regional peace.
In conclusion, McGuinty reiterated Canada's support for Qatar and the broader Gulf region, stating that Canada is enhancing its engagement through direct diplomatic and security collaboration.
