Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, said that Canada could make U.S. steel and aluminum more expensive starting July 21. This will happen if Canada and the U.S. cannot agree on a new trade deal soon.
Carney met with U.S. President Donald Trump at a big meeting in Alberta. Both leaders agreed to keep talking and try to make a deal in the next 30 days. Carney explained that Canada wants to protect its workers and businesses from unfair U.S. taxes on steel and aluminum. He said Canada will change its own taxes on these products from the U.S., making them higher or lower depending on how the talks go.
Recently, Trump made U.S. taxes on steel and aluminum from other countries even higher, which has hurt Canadian companies and caused job losses. Carney warned that this trade fight could hurt the world’s economy and make things more expensive for everyone.
Carney also said Canada will only agree to a deal if it is fair, especially for steel, aluminum, and car makers. He hopes both countries can have free trade and help each other’s workers and businesses.
