World number one Carlos Alcaraz fought back from a slow start to defeat Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday, securing a place in the Japan Open final. Alcaraz will face second seed Taylor Fritz in Tuesday’s showdown, with a chance to claim his eighth title of the year.
Alcaraz, a six-time Grand Slam champion, struggled early in the match, failing to convert four break points in the first set and expressing frustration as Ruud played flawless shots from the baseline and at the net. However, the Spanish star regained composure in the second set, hitting a massive ace to level the scores and turning up the pressure in the decider to clinch the victory.
Taylor Fritz, meanwhile, overcame compatriot Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 6-3 with an outstanding display of serving, hitting 13 aces and maintaining high first-serve percentages. This win marks Fritz’s third final of the season, following grass-court titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne.
“I served insanely well today,” Fritz said. “Any game I didn’t hit three aces, he applied a lot of pressure and outplayed me from the baseline. I just had to stay strong, capitalise on mistakes, and use my serve to gain the advantage.”
The Japan Open final promises an exciting clash as Alcaraz looks for revenge against Fritz, who recently handed him his first loss in four career meetings during the Laver Cup in San Francisco earlier this month. Tennis fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting this high-stakes encounter in Tokyo.
