Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung has won a major legal battle after the High Court dismissed a HK$12 million lawsuit filed by her former agent. The case had remained under public attention for several years due to its high financial value and celebrity involvement.
Former Agent Made Contract Claims
The lawsuit was brought by Asia Entertainment Group president Samuel Yu Yuk-hing. He alleged that Cheung had violated agreements requiring her participation in several film projects produced by the company between 2011 and 2019.
Judge Finds Lack of Evidence
In the court ruling, the judge stated that Yu failed to establish the basic foundation of his case. The court found that Cheung had never signed the exclusive management agreement that served as the central element of the lawsuit.
Questions Raised Over Contract Documents
The judgment noted that a disputed management contract dated 2011 was likely created after tax authorities began examining a large payment made to the actress. The court questioned the authenticity of documents presented during the proceedings.
Advance Payment Claim Rejected
The court also ruled that Yu could not prove that he had paid Cheung HK$2.76 million as an advance for appearances in two film projects. As a result, another major part of the compensation claim was rejected.
Witness Credibility Under Scrutiny
Justice Herbert Au-yeung described Yu as an unreliable witness, stating that parts of his testimony were inconsistent and evasive. The judgment further criticised his conduct regarding document preparation and business practices.
Legal Dispute Comes To An End
The ruling effectively ends one of the most closely followed legal disputes involving the Hong Kong actress. The court concluded that the contractual basis for the multimillion-dollar claim had not been established, resulting in a complete victory for Cheung.
