Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan graced the 65th anniversary of Kanad Hospital, a key establishment in modern medical services within the Abu Dhabi emirate.
The event reflected on the hospital's remarkable journey since its inception in 1960. Initially located in a modest mud-brick guesthouse in Al Ain, its establishment was facilitated by the support of the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The clinic, guided by American doctors Dr. Pat and Marian Kennedy, was a pioneering step in the region’s healthcare framework.
In his speech, Sheikh Mohammed underscored that the inception of the first hospital in Al Ain—predating the formation of the UAE—showcased Sheikh Zayed’s visionary approach, emphasizing public health as essential to nation-building.
Dr. Richard Bramble, the Managing Director of Kanad Hospital, welcomed distinguished attendees, expressing pride in the hospital's enduring legacy. He stated that this milestone highlights years of commitment to providing top-tier medical services to the community.
Among the highlights of the ceremony was the inaugural Marian Kennedy Award, presented to Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, recognizing her contributions to health policy and innovation. The Pat Kennedy Award was awarded to Professor Dr. Humaid Obaid Al Shamsi for his remarkable work in internal medicine and oncology, as well as his leadership in specialized cancer care.
The hospital also recognized dedicated staff members with the Kanad Lifetime Service Award, honoring those with 35 years of service. Additionally, the Kanad Will to Live Award was presented to inspiring patients who triumphed over serious health adversities, highlighting narratives of strength and hope.
Over its 60-plus years, Kanad Hospital has transformed into a premier healthcare provider in the Al Ain region. Active across more than 26,000 square meters, it employs over 80 practitioners from 44 nations and offers specialized services in multiple areas, such as pediatrics, neonatology, obstetrics, gynecology, neurology, vascular surgery, and ophthalmology.
Significantly, Kanad Hospital was the first private hospital in Abu Dhabi to achieve Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. It also gained global distinction as the first institution to secure JCI Clinical Care Program Certifications for its neonatal respiratory distress treatment and natural birth efforts after caesarean sections.
Continuing its humanitarian efforts, Kanad Hospital plays a pivotal role in Al Ain's healthcare landscape, leading in birth deliveries, hosting the largest fetal medicine department, and operating a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, strengthening its dedication to exemplary patient care.
