The Boston Celtics faced a challenging test on Tuesday night against the struggling Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center. Despite the Nets' weak season performance, Boston battled through turnovers, slow defensive play, and foul issues to emerge victorious with a 113-99 win. This triumph marked their first time above the .500 mark this season, improving their record to 8-7.
However, the Celtics dealt with 20 turnovers, the most this season. Jaylen Brown led the charge with eight turnovers, while Derrick White and Payton Pritchard each contributed several more. This allowed the Nets to take an early lead as they stayed competitive until the closing minutes.
Entering the game with only two wins, the Nets, positioned near the bottom of the league for performance, surprised Boston with their aggressive gameplay.
In a shaky first quarter, the Celtics permitted four quick transition three-pointers, falling behind 21-11 before coach Joe Mazzulla called a critical timeout. The Nets capitalized by scoring 22 points in transition before halftime, despite their usual average of just 8.6.
Payton Pritchard was instrumental in shifting the momentum with a strong first quarter, delivering three-pointers, free throws, and assists, finishing the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Jaylen Brown, despite his turnovers, showcased exceptional scoring prowess with 29 points on 9-for-19 shooting, notably scoring 17 points in a crucial stretch of the third quarter.
Despite shooting effectively—61% from the field and 52% from beyond the arc—their turnover issues allowed the Nets to capitalize, as Boston's 12 first-half turnovers gifted Brooklyn 17 points. The Celtics, typically disciplined with the ball, struggled to maintain organization.
Foul trouble exacerbated matters, with Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta each collecting four fouls early in the third quarter, forcing Boston to rely on deep bench players like Josh Minott and Xavier Tillman.
In the final quarter, the Nets briefly took the lead with a three-pointer from Michael Porter Jr. However, the Celtics tightened their defense, with Sam Hauser stealing the ball and contributing to an 8-0 run. Hauser's total of eight points, seven rebounds, and strong defense proved vital.
Derrick White was instrumental on both ends of the court, hitting key three-pointers and blocking shots, helping Boston regain control of the game. The Nets struggled late, going more than seven minutes without a field goal. Jaylen Brown’s deep three-pointer sealed the deal for Boston with under three minutes remaining.
The Celtics are set to play the Nets again on Friday for an NBA Cup group play match at TD Garden, followed by a tough schedule against top playoff contenders.
Inspired by this win, players recognize the need to address turnover issues and enhance defensive focus. As Derrick White remarked, “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”
