Liverpool's Federico Chiesa has declined a call-up to join the Italian national team for their critical World Cup qualifiers in November, confirmed by head coach Gennaro Gattuso during a press briefing on Monday. Italy is facing two important matches—one against Moldova away and another home match against Norway, as they conclude their group qualification campaign. Currently, the Azzurri trail Norway by three points, who also hold a significantly better goal difference.
In the press conference, Gattuso communicated that Chiesa opted out of the squad for personal reasons. He remarked, “I frequently speak to him. It’s essential to respect individual decisions and the issues we all face.” Gattuso emphasized the importance of collaboration and understanding between coach and player. His remarks indicated a total acceptance of Chiesa's personal decision.
Chiesa, who switched to Liverpool from Juventus in the summer of 2024, has encountered a formidable season in England. With limitations on his playing time due to injuries, he's struggled to secure a consistent spot in Arne Slot’s lineup. Thus far, he's made merely two starts this season, both in the Carabao Cup, and has seen limited action in league games. Concerns regarding his match fitness and rhythm likely influenced his choice to forgo international commitments.
This marks not the first occasion Chiesa has missed out on Gattuso’s selection. He was also absent from the squad for qualifiers against Estonia and Israel in October. At that time, Gattuso noted this decision was a mutual agreement. Chiesa had indicated that he wished to return to international play only when he felt “100 percent prepared.” The forward hasn't donned the Italian jersey since 2023, having missed several fixtures due to ongoing muscular issues and recovery sessions.
Since his transfer to Liverpool, Chiesa's game time has been limited. He participated in just 14 matches across all competitions last season, as minor injuries and extended recovery times disrupted his form. At the season's outset, he was even left off Liverpool's initial Champions League roster. However, following a serious injury to teammate Giovanni Leoni, he was eventually included in the European lineup. Despite these hurdles, Liverpool's coach Arne Slot has expressed his belief in Chiesa’s potential, stating that he “requires time to regain full rhythm and confidence.”
For Italy, the road ahead includes two vital matches. They will first compete against Moldova away before welcoming Norway in a potentially pivotal fixture for qualification. Norway, led by star striker Erling Haaland, enjoys a substantial 16-goal advantage in goal difference, complicating Italy’s direct qualification hopes. Italy must win both fixtures while wishing for favorable outcomes in Norway’s other matchups to keep their chances alive.
Gattuso remained composed regarding Chiesa's absence, directing focus towards the players available. “We have a solid team ethos. Those present recognize the weight of these upcoming matches,” he commented. “Of course, Federico is an exceptional talent and crucial player, but the group takes precedence.” His remarks display an understanding of player fatigue and mental challenges, acknowledging the difficulties modern footballers face in juggling club and national obligations.
Chiesa's decision has generated mixed responses in Italy. While some fans express disappointment, believing Italy needs its top players for such significant matches, others offer empathy, highlighting Chiesa's challenging year physically and mentally. Former players and analysts recommend focusing on Chiesa's long-term wellbeing over immediate appearances.
For now, Chiesa is likely to remain in England, concentrating on training with Liverpool during the international recess. Reports indicate that he aims to utilize this time to recover fitness and enhance his sharpness prior to re-entering regular first-team play. Liverpool's medical staff is closely monitoring his status to avert any recurrence of past injuries. If all goes smoothly, he could be in line for selection in Liverpool's upcoming Premier League matches come December.
Federico Chiesa’s choice emphasizes the increasing awareness among modern footballers regarding fitness management, mental health, and career longevity. Although Italy’s journey is hindered by his absence, Chiesa views this period as a chance to regain strength and confidence. Gattuso’s respectful stance mirrors a larger cultural shift in football—acknowledging player welfare as equally important as team success. Supporters from both Italy and Liverpool will hope that this break enables the winger to soon rediscover his top form.
