Taiwan’s government has expressed concern over China’s growing interest in importing atemoya, a popular fruit grown mainly in Taitung County. The warning comes after Chinese companies pledged to increase purchases of Taiwanese atemoyas during a recent trade forum held in Xiamen, a city located across the Taiwan Strait.
The atemoya, often described as a hybrid custard apple with sweet and creamy flesh, has become one of Taiwan’s most recognized agricultural products. China has traditionally been a major buyer of the fruit, making Taiwanese farmers heavily dependent on the mainland market for exports.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture cautioned growers against relying too heavily on Chinese demand. Officials argued that previous trade experiences showed how sudden restrictions or policy changes could leave farmers vulnerable. The ministry described the situation as a pattern where increased purchases are followed by unexpected trade barriers that create uncertainty for producers.
The concerns stem from China’s earlier suspension of Taiwanese atemoya imports in 2021 over pest-related issues. Although some trade resumed later, additional restrictions and tariffs were introduced, affecting the stability of the market and creating challenges for fruit exporters.
Taiwanese authorities also pointed out that China has been expanding its own atemoya cultivation, which could increase competition for Taiwan’s growers in the future. Officials believe this development may reduce long-term demand for imported fruit from the island.
The debate has sparked political discussion within Taiwan. Some opposition politicians argue that the government is unnecessarily politicizing agricultural trade and that stronger export opportunities should be welcomed. They believe increased access to the Chinese market could benefit local farmers and rural communities.
To reduce risks, Taiwan plans to encourage product diversification and develop new markets. Authorities are promoting processed atemoya products such as frozen fruit, puree, and fruit-based beverages to strengthen the industry and provide farmers with more stable income opportunities.
