China has intensified construction work on what is expected to become the world's largest hydroelectric dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet. The project is located around 50 kilometres from the Indian border and has drawn close attention from Indian authorities due to its potential downstream impact.
Strategic River Flows Into India
The Yarlung Tsangpo River originates in Tibet before entering India through Arunachal Pradesh, where it becomes the Siang River. It later flows into Assam as the Brahmaputra, one of the country's most important river systems that supports millions of people through agriculture, transportation and water supply.
India Monitoring Developments Closely
According to reports, Indian agencies are closely monitoring the project through intelligence assessments and satellite imagery. Officials view the dam as a significant element of China's expanding hydropower infrastructure in Tibet and are evaluating its possible effects on downstream regions.
Environmental Experts Raise Concerns
Experts have warned that large-scale dam construction could alter the river's natural flow, affect sediment transportation and disturb ecological systems. Changes in water patterns may also influence flood management and agricultural activities in areas located downstream.
Strategic Implications for Regional Security
Analysts believe the project also carries strategic implications. Control over water resources in the upper reaches of a transboundary river could provide China with additional leverage during periods of geopolitical tension. This aspect has added to India's long-standing concerns regarding the project.
Diplomatic Engagement Continues
India has repeatedly raised concerns with China through diplomatic channels and under the Expert Level Mechanism established in 2006. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also discussed issues related to transboundary rivers during engagements with Chinese officials in recent years.
Government Focuses on Preparedness
Indian authorities say they are continuing to monitor developments while strengthening disaster preparedness and water management capabilities in downstream regions. The government maintains that safeguarding the interests and livelihoods of people dependent on the Brahmaputra remains a priority.
