China has imposed new export controls on 40 Japanese entities, saying the move is necessary to address concerns over Japan's growing military expansion. The restrictions target companies involved in sectors that may use dual-use technologies with both civilian and military applications.
Companies Added to Control Lists
China's Commerce Ministry placed 20 Japanese companies on a control list that prohibits Chinese and foreign exporters from supplying them with dual-use products manufactured in China. Another 20 firms were added to a watch list, requiring exporters to obtain special government licences before completing any shipments.
Restrictions Target Military-Related Technology
The companies affected include subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, as well as divisions of Fujitsu, Komatsu, and Mitsui E&S. Chinese authorities said exporters must submit risk assessments and written guarantees confirming that exported products will not be used for military purposes.
China Links Move to Rising Security Concerns
Beijing said the measures are intended to discourage what it described as Japan's "remilitarization." Chinese officials accused Tokyo of expanding offensive military capabilities and strengthening defence cooperation with international partners, developments that China says threaten regional stability.
Japan Rejects China's Decision
Japan's government strongly criticised the export restrictions, calling them unacceptable and regrettable. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said Tokyo will carefully assess the impact of the measures and consider appropriate responses while continuing diplomatic engagement with Beijing.

Relations Remain Under Pressure
Tensions between China and Japan have increased over Taiwan, regional security and military activities in the Pacific. Analysts say the latest export controls serve as both an economic measure and a diplomatic signal as the two countries continue to face disagreements on defence and geopolitical issues.
Trade and Diplomacy Face Fresh Challenges
Although China said the restrictions apply only to selected companies dealing with dual-use technologies, experts believe the move reflects growing strategic competition between Asia's two largest economies. Future relations will likely depend on diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
