Heavy rain and severe flooding caused widespread destruction across several regions of China this week, leaving at least 12 people dead and forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate from affected areas. Authorities launched major rescue and emergency response operations as rising water levels submerged roads, homes, and public infrastructure.
The worst-hit areas included Hunan, Hubei, and Guizhou provinces, where continuous torrential rain triggered flash floods and landslides. Chinese state media reported that rescue teams were working around the clock to locate missing people and provide assistance to stranded residents trapped by floodwaters.
In Hunan province, five people were confirmed dead while at least 11 others remained missing after extreme rainfall hit Shimen County. More than 19,000 residents were relocated to safer areas as emergency officials warned of worsening flood conditions. Authorities said the county recorded over 339 millimeters of rainfall within 24 hours, while one town experienced record-breaking rainfall levels in just a few hours.
Nearby Hubei province also suffered major flood damage as streets turned into rivers and rescue workers used inflatable boats to evacuate trapped residents. Several homes reportedly collapsed under the pressure of floodwaters while communication services in some areas were disrupted. Officials confirmed three deaths and four missing persons linked to the disaster.
In southwestern Guizhou province, heavy flooding caused further destruction, killing four people and leaving five others missing. Roads were damaged, buildings were flooded, and emergency shelters were opened for thousands of displaced residents. Authorities said more than 3,700 people had to be evacuated from high-risk locations as rainfall continued across the region.
Chinese weather authorities warned that more rain could hit affected areas in the coming days, increasing the risk of additional flooding and landslides. Emergency teams have been deployed across vulnerable regions while local governments continue monitoring rivers, dams, and transportation networks to prevent further casualties.
Flood-related disasters remain a major seasonal challenge in China, especially during periods of intense monsoon rainfall. Last year, deadly floods in Beijing and surrounding regions caused significant casualties and economic losses, highlighting growing concerns over extreme weather linked to climate change.
Separately, Chinese state media also reported that 10 people died after a pickup truck reportedly fell from a bridge in the Guangxi region during severe weather conditions. Authorities are continuing investigations into the incident while rescue and recovery operations remain ongoing across flood-hit provinces.
