China Man Jailed Over Illegal Breeding of 300 Pythons

China Man Jailed Over Illegal Breeding of 300 Pythons

Post by : Shakul

Authorities in eastern China have jailed a man after police uncovered a large illegal python breeding operation inside his apartment. The investigation began when officials noticed unusually high electricity consumption at the property, eventually leading them to discover hundreds of protected snakes being kept inside the flat.

The case took place in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, where officers found pythons stored in plastic containers throughout multiple rooms.

Investigation Began After Snake Was Found

The investigation started when a local resident discovered a large exotic snake near a mountain. Since pythons are not native to the area and are protected under Chinese law, authorities suspected an illegal breeder was operating nearby.

Wildlife experts informed investigators that pythons require warm temperatures and high humidity, meaning anyone breeding large numbers of snakes would likely consume unusually high amounts of electricity.

Police Found More Than 300 Pythons

Using electricity usage records, police identified the apartment of a man surnamed Guo. During the raid, officers discovered 309 pythons packed inside plastic boxes across two bedrooms and the living room, while the suspect used only one room for himself.

Investigators later found that Guo and his accomplices had started with four pythons in 2014 and gradually expanded the operation by breeding and selling the reptiles online.

Illegal Wildlife Business Operated for Years

According to investigators, Guo described himself as a "creature creator" and admitted that he enjoyed breeding pythons with different color patterns. Authorities believe the reptiles were sold through online platforms as part of an illegal wildlife trade operation.

The wider investigation led police to seize a total of 436 pythons with an estimated value of 30 million yuan.

Court Sentences Three Accused

A local court sentenced Guo and two accomplices for illegally breeding and trading protected wildlife. Under Chinese law, illegally breeding or selling protected animals can result in prison sentences of up to five years depending on the seriousness of the offence.

The rescued snakes have since been transferred to a local zoo where they will receive proper care.

Authorities Warn Against Illegal Wildlife Trade

Officials said the case highlights China's continued efforts to crack down on illegal wildlife breeding and trafficking. Authorities urged the public to report suspicious activities involving protected species and reminded breeders that strict laws remain in place to protect endangered wildlife.

The investigation also demonstrated how unusual utility usage can help uncover hidden criminal activities involving illegal animal trade.
