China and Pakistan on Monday reaffirmed their long-standing strategic partnership, pledging to deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen their historically close relationship at a time when shifting global dynamics are reshaping regional alliances.
Both countries described their bond as an “ironclad friendship,” reflecting decades of diplomatic trust and mutual support. Pakistan remains one of China’s most reliable partners, consistently backing Beijing on sensitive international issues such as Taiwan, Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong and the South China Sea.
In return, China has made significant economic commitments to Pakistan through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a cornerstone project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The multibillion-dollar corridor has supported major infrastructure, energy and connectivity projects across Pakistan, playing a central role in the country’s development strategy.
Despite the strong partnership, security concerns have posed challenges in recent years. Repeated militant attacks targeting Chinese nationals involved in CPEC and other projects have caused friction, prompting Beijing to seek stronger assurances for the safety of its citizens and investments.
In a joint statement, both sides agreed to upgrade CPEC, expanding cooperation into new areas including industry, agriculture and mining, while also enhancing collaboration in the financial and banking sectors. China acknowledged Pakistan’s recent measures aimed at improving the protection of Chinese personnel and ongoing projects.
China and Pakistan also expressed shared concern over militant groups operating from Afghanistan, which borders both countries. They called for clear and effective actions to dismantle and eliminate all terrorist organisations entrenched there, stressing the importance of regional stability.
The renewed commitment comes amid signs of improving relations between Pakistan and the United States. Since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House, cooperation between Washington and Islamabad has increased, particularly in counter-terrorism efforts. Pakistan has highlighted its role in assisting the arrest of a suspect linked to the 2021 attack on US troops at Kabul airport, an effort publicly acknowledged by Trump.
The US administration has also released nearly $400 million for a programme monitoring Pakistan’s use of F-16 fighter jets in counter-terrorism operations, despite a broader freeze on foreign aid. Pakistan has even indicated it would recommend Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for helping defuse tensions with India.
Even as Pakistan balances its growing engagement with Washington, both Beijing and Islamabad emphasized that their strategic partnership remains firm. Senior officials from both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening cooperation and advancing mutual interests, signaling that their “all-weather” relationship will continue to adapt while remaining resilient in a changing geopolitical landscape.
