A Chinese scientist was arrested at Detroit airport while entering the United States. This is the third recent case where someone has been caught trying to bring biological materials into the country without permission.
Officials said the scientist had earlier sent biological materials, related to certain worms, to a lab at the University of Michigan. These materials need a special permit from the government to be brought into the US.
The scientist is a student at a university in Wuhan, China. She came to the US planning to work for one year at the University of Michigan. However, when she landed in the US on Sunday, she was taken into custody.
According to court papers, her shipments were stopped and checked last year and again earlier this year. One of the shipments was even hidden inside a book. The worms she was sending are not known to be dangerous, but they still require government approval to import.
Officials say the rules for bringing biological materials into the US are very strict. They are meant to keep research safe and protect people. If someone breaks these rules, it can create big problems, even if the materials are not harmful.
The scientist is now in jail and waiting for a bond hearing on Wednesday.
This arrest happened just after two other Chinese scientists were charged for trying to bring a harmful fungus into the US. One of them was sent back to China, and the other was also arrested and is still in custody.
Bringing any kind of biological sample into a country must be done the right way, with the proper paperwork. These rules are important to protect the public and make sure research is done safely.
