Malaysia’s Chief Secretary Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar has issued a strong reminder to civil servants that the upcoming work-from-home (WFH) policy is not an excuse to relax or reduce efficiency. The new policy, set to begin on April 15, emphasizes maintaining the same level of productivity as working in the office.
Speaking in Shah Alam, he clarified that remote work—locally referred to as BDR—must not be misunderstood as leisure time. He stressed that officers must meet clearly defined key performance indicators (KPIs) and remain accountable under strict supervision by department heads.
The WFH initiative is part of Malaysia’s broader civil service reform, shifting focus from physical attendance to measurable outcomes. Officials are expected to uphold discipline, integrity, and loyalty to national leadership, including Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, while executing government policies responsibly.
Addressing economic challenges, he also urged departments to cut unnecessary expenses such as excessive electricity use, physical meetings, and overseas travel. Civil servants were further advised to act responsibly on social media and avoid spreading unverified information, adhering strictly to official regulations and laws.
