In a significant show of dissent, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) held a large protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday, attracting a diverse group of students and young professionals from across the nation. This rally sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while spotlighting alleged issues within India's examination framework.
Protesters, numbering in the hundreds, filled the area with national flags, flowers, and books. Many donned cockroach masks, the movement's emblem. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke led the event, arriving under strict security measures.
Demonstrators voiced their concerns over perceived irregularities and leaked papers in significant exams such as NEET, CBSE, CUET, and SSC, claiming these issues jeopardize the futures of countless students throughout India. Slogans demanding accountability in educational practices and Pradhan's resignation were prevalent among the crowd.
Addressing supporters, Dipke insisted on holding accountable those behind the exam system failures, emphasizing that students warranted a fair and transparent education landscape. He urged authorities to tighten measures against examination fraud.
The Delhi Police authorized the protest from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with officials labeling it a one-off approval while mandating adherence to conditions for a peaceful gathering.
In anticipation of potential unrest, security measures were heightened across Central Delhi. Police bolstered their presence around Jantar Mantar, major access points into the capital, and public transportation hubs. Over 1,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed to ensure order.
Barricades surrounded the protest site, and entry-point checks were enforced. Restrictions were placed in specific areas to manage crowd sizes and maintain public safety throughout the demonstration.
Prior to the protest's commencement, Dipke urged attendees to remain orderly and collaborate with law enforcement. He encouraged participants to carry national symbols and flowers, suggesting they offer flowers to officers as a peaceful display of respect.
The event saw substantial participation from high school and college students, alongside young professionals. Demonstrators echoed the need for greater transparency and accountability in education, with many expressing anxiety over the repercussions of alleged examination malpractice on career prospects.
Delhi Police and local officials maintained vigilant oversight throughout the protest, confirming they were ready to manage any arising issues and ensure public order. The event continued to be closely monitored as demonstrators made their voices heard at one of the capital's iconic protest venues.
