Italy edged closer to claiming their third consecutive Davis Cup title following a thrilling 2-0 victory against Belgium in the semi-finals on Friday. The highlight of the day was Flavio Cobolli, who delivered a nail-biting performance that will go down in Davis Cup history. His emotionally charged victory ensured Italy's spot in the finals for the third time running.
At just 23, Cobolli played before an electrified crowd at the SuperTennis Arena, who rallied behind him throughout the match. In a gripping contest, he overcame Belgium’s Zizou Bergs with a score of 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(15), marked by a tense final-set tiebreak that extended to a staggering 32 points—one of the most exhilarating moments the tournament has ever witnessed.
Both competitors showcased impressive, aggressive tennis, engaging in long rallies and high-stakes points that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Bergs displayed tremendous tenacity and nearly pushed the tie into the deciding doubles match. Cobolli faced challenges in closing out the match, missing his first six match points, yet his determination paid off at the seventh with an unreturnable serve, triggering a euphoric celebration among Italian fans.
Italy's captain, Filippo Volandri, commended Cobolli, stating, “In my five years as captain, I’ve never seen anything quite like it. This match was astonishing; it was mostly heart with a sprinkle of strategy.” His remarks highlighted Cobolli's extraordinary resolve.
Earlier, Matteo Berrettini set the momentum by securing Italy's lead with a confident victory over Belgium’s Raphael Collignon 6-3, 6-4. This marks Berrettini’s eighth consecutive win in the Davis Cup, as he previously won all six matches last year in Italy’s title run against the Netherlands. His reliability and skill have been instrumental for Italy.
Italy will face either Germany or Spain in the final on Sunday. Another win would mark a historic achievement, making them the first team to secure three successive titles since the Challenge Round format was discontinued in 1971.
Taking on the mantle of Italy's top player amidst the absence of stars like world number two Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, Cobolli has risen to the occasion. He previously defeated Filip Misolic in the quarter-finals and showcased remarkable mental fortitude in overcoming Bergs. His victory was a testament to his patience and ability to thrive under pressure.
Reflecting on the win, Cobolli said, “It’s tough to express my feelings after this match. I played for my team, my family, and this day will forever be one of the best in my life.” His heartfelt comments underscored the significance of the victory both personally and for his team.
Italy now boasts a 12-tie winning streak in the Davis Cup, becoming the first team to reach three consecutive finals since Australia in 2001. Italy aims to seize this opportunity and etch a remarkable chapter in their tennis legacy.
With formidable players like Berrettini and the burgeoning talent of Cobolli, Italy enters Sunday’s final with both confidence and ambition, now just one victory away from achieving a coveted Davis Cup three-peat, a feat accomplished by only a few nations.
