Colombia clinched the last position in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, achieving a 1-0 win against Ghana at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday. Jhon Arias' early strike was sufficient to propel the South American team into the knockout phase, setting up a match against Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday.
Despite controlling the game and creating multiple opportunities, Colombia failed to capitalize further. Ghana, on the other hand, struggled throughout and could not register a single shot on goal.
Ghana made an impressive entrance when midfielder Thomas Partey unleashed a fierce shot that narrowly missed the target in the first minute. However, this chance quickly faded as Colombia seized control of the match.
In a twist of fate, both teams had to make early substitutions due to injuries. Jhon Cordoba was replaced by Luis Suarez for Colombia after sustaining a groin issue, while Ghana swapped in Alidu Seidu for the injured Marvin Senaya.
Colombia broke the stalemate in the 14th minute when substitute Luis Suarez kept the play alive on the right flank, delivering a perfect cross where a free Jhon Arias skillfully directed the ball into the net.
This goal left Ghana scrambling as Colombia confidently maintained possession and continued their offensive strategy.
Colombia generated numerous opportunities to extend their lead before halftime. Notable was a missed chance by Bayern Munich's Luis Diaz in the 39th minute as he sent his shot wide.
As the first half drew to a close, Ghana's goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi made a superb save, blocking a header from Johan Mojica.
Statistically, Colombia dominated the first half, as Ghana failed to muster a single shot on target, completing less than half of Colombia's 319 successful passes.
The second half saw Colombia continue to press for a second goal but unable to secure their win comfortably. Luis Diaz had a goal disallowed due to offside and later sent a shot right into Lawrence Ati Zigi's hands.
Juan Quintero also came close late in the game but shot wide, missing another chance to widen the gap.
Despite numerous chances missed, Arias' goal from the first half ensured a win for Colombia against a Ghana team that concluded the game without any shots on target.
This victory qualifies Colombia for the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, making them the last team to secure a knockout stage position. They will take on Switzerland in Vancouver on Tuesday, following their disciplined play and crucial early goal against Ghana.
