On Wednesday, Iranian state television reported that a foreign container ship ran aground in the Strait of Hormuz after deviating from a route approved by Iranian authorities.
While the report identified the ship as foreign, specific details regarding its name, ownership, cargo, or destination were not disclosed.
The vessel is said to have navigated into shallow waters instead of following the designated path, leading to its grounding.
This incident underscores Iran's stance regarding its claim over navigational control in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly following tension with the U.S.
This waterway is vital, with about 20% of the world’s oil and gas supplies transported through it during peacetime.
Iranian authorities emphasized the necessity for ships to adhere to instructions from the Revolutionary Guard when traversing the strait.
Warnings have been issued to captains and shipping companies about potential consequences for not following the designated "Route of Authority" in the region.
The report also recounted incidents involving two vessels attacked by Iran for attempting passage without permission; one of these was carrying crude oil from Qatar.
This shipping incident coincides with ongoing discussions about future navigation protocols in the Strait of Hormuz.
Under a temporary agreement, Iran and the U.S. had allowed free passage for vessels for 60 days, although Iran still insists on controlling routes and charging transit fees.
The U.S. and Gulf nations have rejected Iran's proposal to impose passage fees.
Additionally, a new shipping corridor near Oman was proposed, following a series of regional attacks underlining ongoing tensions.
The incident unfolded as U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were in Doha, Qatar, for negotiations aimed at achieving a long-term resolution to tensions with Iran.
Sources indicate that technical-level diplomatic discussions began on Wednesday.
While senior officials aim to finalize agreements, disputes over the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon present significant hurdles.
Iran has yet to confirm whether these negotiations have commenced.
Qatar has verified that Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner conferred with the Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, earlier this week.
The discussions reportedly centered around the interim agreements and strategies for enhancing regional security through dialogue.
Further discussions also touched upon Lebanon, where Iran demands the cessation of hostilities between the Hezbollah group and Israeli forces, which remain contentious.
Iran has called for Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon, while Israel insists on maintaining control to conduct military operations.
While Iranian officials did not confirm the talks on Wednesday, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf stated efforts are ongoing to end the conflict.
He cautioned that while dialogue continues, Iran is ready for military escalation should agreements not be honored.
Following the attacks over the weekend, shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz decreased, but reports show many vessels have successfully navigated out.
Thailand's Foreign Ministry confirmed that 10 of its 11 vessels have left the strait safely, while South Korean officials noted that most of their stranded vessels have also departed.
On a separate note, Iraqi security forces shot down an unarmed drone over Baghdad’s Green Zone on Wednesday, with officials suggesting it was likely used for surveillance.
This incident marks a significant event in Baghdad since the ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran.
