Cortina Imposes Ticket Limits for Upcoming Winter Olympics

Cortina Imposes Ticket Limits for Upcoming Winter Olympics

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – As the countdown to the 2026 Winter Olympics continues, organizers in the scenic Dolomite region are limiting ticket sales for events in Cortina d’Ampezzo. Ongoing transport congestion and delays in a significant cable car project have led officials to reduce the spectator capacity.

The Apollonio-Socrepes gondola, intended to transport spectators from the town center to the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre, is running behind schedule. Officials are concerned that without this essential lift, traffic jams could lead to significant difficulties for attendees aiming to access the skiing venues.

In addition to hosting alpine skiing, the events in Cortina will include curling, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton competitions. Provincial transport councillor Massimo Bortoluzzi noted that initial spectator estimates of 200,000 have been reduced by approximately 15% to align with the town's current transport capabilities.

Cortina, which previously hosted the Winter Games in 1956, now contends with the unique obstacle of lacking a train station, resulting in significant traffic slowdowns. With a modest permanent population of just 5,500 residents, managing the influx of visitors during the Games pose a considerable challenge. Only vehicles with special permits will be allowed in during the event, aimed at locals, second-home occupants, and essential service personnel. Ticket holders will need to utilize shuttle buses from specified parking areas to access the various venues.

The gondola project, featuring 50 cabins and three stations, is designed to carry up to 2,400 passengers per hour. Despite facing legal challenges, ground instability due to potential landslides, and a lengthy approval process, authorities remain optimistic that the lift will be operational in time for the Olympic Games.

Through these stringent measures, organizers aim to ensure both safety and accessibility while maintaining the traditional Olympic spirit in this historic alpine setting.
