Los Angeles is reaching a pivotal moment as it prepares to host its inaugural Paralympic Games in 2028. Marking a countdown of 1,000 days, organisers have unveiled the initial competition schedule. This edition of the Paralympics promises a greater array of sports, sessions, and medal opportunities than ever seen before.
The LA28 organising committee has indicated that the event will showcase 23 different sports, featuring 560 medal events and 294 competition sessions. These parameters were crafted through collaboration with global sports federations and the Olympic Broadcasting Services. The focus remains on supporting athlete wellbeing while ensuring the events are accessible to audiences worldwide, both on television and online.
Ileana Rodriguez, the vice president for Paralympic strategy and relations at LA28, emphasized the design of the schedule as a priority, aiming directly at the needs of the athletes. Hosting the first-ever Paralympic Games in Los Angeles holds significance for the city, with plans for the event to resonate positively with both competitors and spectators. The schedule aims to facilitate smooth competitions, equitable timings, and an engaging viewing experience for fans globally.
Mayor Karen Bass has also shared her enthusiasm, noting that the 2028 Paralympics will feature a record number of female athletes, marking a vital advance towards gender parity in sports worldwide. Los Angeles aspires to establish a welcoming atmosphere that inspires athletes from all over the globe.
The opening ceremony is set for August 15 at SoFi Stadium, known for hosting landmark sports and entertainment events. The games will culminate on August 27 at the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which also served as a venue during the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, linking the 2028 Paralympics to the city’s rich sporting heritage.
Champions of the first Paralympic events in Los Angeles will be crowned on the very first day. Events set to award medals on this opening day include:
Para athletics
Wheelchair fencing
Shooting Para sport
Para equestrian
Para track cycling
These events will immediately highlight the power, skill, and resolve of the athletes participating.
Among the most thrilling updates is the inclusion of Para climbing. This sport will be introduced to the Paralympic agenda for the first time in 2028, with competitions scheduled over four days beginning on Day 9. Anticipation is high for Para climbing, considering its rapid rise in popularity among athletes and fans alike.
Furthermore, popular team sports—wheelchair rugby and sitting volleyball—will adopt extended formats, including play-in rounds, to provide more teams with a chance to compete and grow their experience. The organisers expect this structure to enhance competitive spirit and joy for spectators.
While the initial schedule is now public, organisers have confirmed the forthcoming release of a comprehensive event-by-event schedule in 2026. This update will include precise timings and elaborate plans for each sport.
As the countdown continues with 1,000 days until opening ceremonies, excitement is palpable in Los Angeles. The 2028 Paralympic Games aspire to establish benchmarks in inclusivity, engagement, and athleticism, with the ultimate goal of delivering an unforgettable festival celebrating sporting excellence and the human spirit.
