In a historic achievement, Curacao has qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time ever. This small Caribbean island, home to just over 150,000 residents, will step onto the global football stage in 2026. A remarkable feat for a nation smaller than many urban centers around the globe.
Curacao's journey is all the more impressive when compared to prior records. Previously, Iceland held the title of the smallest nation to qualify, but Curacao is significantly smaller both in population and land area. With just 171 square miles, it now proudly stands among the world's football elite.
A mere decade ago, Curacao was ranked at 150th on FIFA's world rankings. Today, they have climbed to 82nd, showcasing consistent improvement and progress, bolstered by exceptional coaching, capable leaders, and dedicated players striving for greatness.
Since becoming a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010, after being part of the Netherlands Antilles, Curacao has developed a formidable football program—one that could reach the World Cup in just over ten years.
Their qualification was solidified after an impressive campaign marked by ten matches, seven of which they won, finishing without a single defeat. The team exhibited remarkable teamwork, discipline, and confidence throughout the qualification process.
The climax of their last match was fraught with tension; in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Curacao's Jeremy Antonisse seemed to bring down Isaac Hayden in the box, resulting in a penalty being awarded. The Curacao team was left stunned.
However, following a video review, the referee overturned the decision, much to the relief of Curacao fans who celebrated the preservation of their World Cup quest. Moments later, the match concluded, igniting celebrations across the island.
Curacao joins a group of debut teams at the 2026 World Cup alongside Cape Verde, Uzbekistan, and Jordan, all of whom have qualified for the first time. The tournament’s expanded format—growing from 32 to 48 teams—provided more opportunities for nations to qualify.
With automatic qualifications already secured for host nations Canada, Mexico, and the United States, additional spots opened for regional teams, and Curacao seized the chance to make history.
Midfielder Juninho Bacuna expressed the significance of this achievement before the final match, stating that qualifying would rank as one of the most monumental endeavors in Curacao’s history. He was indeed correct, reflecting on how just a few years prior, such a dream felt unattainable. Now, it stands as a reality.
At the age of 78, Curacao coach Dick Advocaat will also make history as the oldest coach to lead a team in the World Cup, surpassing the previous record set in 2010.
Curacao will be joined at the tournament by Haiti and Panama, with Haiti securing its first World Cup spot since 1974 after a 2-0 victory over Nicaragua, alongside Panama's confirmed qualification.
Jamaica, having missed their chance at a direct qualification, will need to compete in the Intercontinental Play-Offs.
Curacao’s qualification is a testament to its resilience, determination, and growth—a narrative of a small nation that persistently chased its sporting dream. The team, its coaches, and the entire island now eagerly anticipate the 2026 World Cup, where they will proudly represent their country for the first time.
