In a heart-pounding NBA Cup encounter on Friday night, the Golden State Warriors edged out the San Antonio Spurs 109-108, powered by an amazing 49-point display from Stephen Curry. Curry's performance included 31 points during the second half, allowing him to overshadow Spurs’ star Victor Wembanyama in this tightly contested match. His critical free throws with six seconds remaining ensured the Warriors’ first win in the NBA Cup.
Wembanyama put up a commendable 26 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists across 38 minutes, but his team fell to 1-1 in the NBA Cup, succumbing to a tight contest that highlighted the talent on both sides. Curry shot an impressive 16 of 26 from the floor and 9 of 17 from beyond the arc, marking his highest scoring game this season. With this performance, he tied with NBA legend Michael Jordan for the most 40-point games after turning 30, now totaling 44.
The Warriors completed a two-game sweep in San Antonio, showcasing their ability to rally in the fourth quarter to claim both wins. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr remarked on the playoff-like atmosphere of the back-to-back games in San Antonio, emphasizing their increased pace and competitiveness.
The fourth quarter was rife with tension, featuring multiple run-ins between Draymond Green and Wembanyama, necessitating officials to separate them on three occasions during an inbounds play. Wembanyama executed a spectacular alley-oop dunk over Green, which was nullified due to a previous foul. Shortly after, Green received his fifth foul and expressed his frustration by leaving the court.
In the final moments, Wembanyama thwarted a layup attempt from Jimmy Butler with 33 seconds on the clock, preserving the Spurs' 108-107 lead. Nevertheless, San Antonio could not extend their advantage when De’Aaron Fox missed a jumper with 12 seconds remaining. Moments later, Curry was fouled by Fox, sinking both free throws to give the Warriors a late one-point lead. Fox's 18-foot jump shot at the buzzer went awry, confirming the Warriors' victory.
Additional contributors for Golden State included Jimmy Butler with 21 points, while Brandin Podziemski and Will Richard each added 10 points. For the Spurs, De’Aaron Fox finished with 24 points and 10 assists, and Julian Champagnie led his team with 14 points.
Next, the Warriors will face the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, while the Spurs will host the Sacramento Kings the same day. This win underscores the Warriors' ability to perform under pressure, with Curry continuing to affirm his status as one of the league's top players.
