In a captivating matchup, Stephen Curry dazzled with a remarkable 46-point performance, guiding the Golden State Warriors to a 125-120 triumph against the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night in San Antonio. This game marks the first of two encounters between the teams within three days, leading up to another clash on Friday in the NBA Cup.
The Spurs began the game on a high note, establishing a 16-point lead in the first half and holding a seven-point advantage at halftime. However, Golden State surged in the third quarter, spearheaded by Curry’s offensive mastery as he tallied 22 points in that period alone, contributing to the Warriors’ impressive 43-point third quarter and flipping the game in their favor.
Entering the final quarter, Golden State held a solid 92-84 advantage and maintained momentum, despite the Spurs attempting a late comeback led by De’Aaron Fox, who reduced the deficit to just one point with over 10 minutes remaining. Nevertheless, the Warriors responded decisively, with Curry and Jimmy Butler III combining for 18 points down the stretch to secure victory.
Butler III supported Curry effectively, finishing the game with 28 points, while Moses Moody added 19 points alongside consistent contributions on both ends. This win signifies Golden State's second victory in their last three matches, revitalizing the team after a rocky start to the season.
On the other hand, Victor Wembanyama shone for the Spurs with a triple-double, totaling 31 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. Despite his stellar efforts, the team faltered against the Warriors’ onslaught. Stephon Castle added 23 points and 10 assists, while Devin Vassell contributed 15 points. Despite a balanced scoring effort, the Spurs couldn’t hold onto their initial lead and saw their three-game winning streak snapped.
The opening quarter showcased the Spurs’ confidence, as they swiftly built an eight-point lead in just seven minutes when Castle made a layup. They further extended their lead to 28-14 thanks to a three-pointer from Julian Champagnie at the close of the first quarter. In the second quarter, a three-pointer from Wembanyama pushed the Spurs’ lead to 33-17 with only 10 minutes left until halftime.
As the game progressed, Golden State began to chip away at the deficit, with Curry’s pivotal three-point play reducing the gap to eight points midway through the second quarter. Yet, the Spurs rallied, allowing Castle’s powerful dunk to extend their lead back to 56-40 with just over three minutes remaining before halftime.
The momentum shifted just before halftime as the Warriors executed a 9-0 run, with five points coming from Curry, which brought the score to 56-49 at the break, narrowing the gap. At that juncture, Curry had netted 15 points, while Moody and Butler contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Warriors. For the Spurs, Castle led with 14 points, closely followed by Wembanyama with 13.
In the second half, Curry's dominance continued with his exceptional long-range shooting and playmaking lifting the entire Warriors squad. The Warriors also improved defensively, forcing turnovers and minimizing the Spurs’ scoring chances. The Golden State team retained its momentum as the game unfolded, and even though the Spurs attempted a late rally, they were unable to recover from the Warriors’ robust third-quarter performance.
This victory positions the Warriors favorably in the Western Conference, showcasing their capacity to excel when Curry is firing on all cylinders, while the Spurs will need to regroup ahead of their rematch on Friday.
