Shares of China's largest memory chip manufacturer, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), surged by more than 470% during their debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's Star Market, marking one of the strongest market debuts in recent years.
The sharp rise in the company's share price lifted its market valuation to approximately 3.3 trillion yuan (US$487.3 billion; £364.9 billion). With this valuation, CXMT has become the most valuable listed company in mainland China.
The impressive stock market debut comes even as technology shares around the world have faced significant selling pressure this month.
Founded in 2016 by Chairman Zhu Yiming, ChangXin Memory Technologies is headquartered in Hefei, Anhui Province, in eastern China.
The company manufactures dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips, which are widely used in artificial intelligence (AI) data centres, smartphones, personal computers, tablets, and other electronic devices.
CXMT has stated that it will use the majority of the funds raised through its initial public offering (IPO) to increase memory chip production and strengthen its research and development activities.
The successful listing is expected to provide encouragement to Chinese financial officials, who have introduced several measures aimed at supporting the country's stock market after a recent downturn erased more than US$1.5 trillion in market value over the past few weeks.
The strong investor response also reflects growing interest in a domestic semiconductor company as Beijing continues its efforts to make China's technology sector more self-reliant.
Despite CXMT's successful market debut, the global DRAM industry continues to be dominated by Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron. Together, these three companies account for approximately 90% of worldwide DRAM production.
Earlier this month, SK Hynix raised US$26.5 billion (£19.8 billion) through its share offering in New York, making it the largest-ever listing by a foreign company in the United States.
The South Korean chipmaker, which is a major supplier to AI chip company Nvidia, said it sold 177.9 million American depositary shares at US$149 per share.
The stock climbed by as much as 17% during its first trading day on the Nasdaq, although it later gave back part of those gains.
In May, SK Hynix's market value exceeded US$1 trillion in South Korea, supported by rising global demand for AI-related chips.
