Colombo: Torrential rains and severe flooding caused by Cyclone Ditwah have left Sri Lanka reeling, claiming the lives of 123 people, while another 130 remain missing, according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). The cyclone, which made landfall midweek, has caused widespread devastation across the island, with nearly 44,000 residents moved to state-run welfare centres after their homes were destroyed in the week-long downpours.
Director General Sampath Kotuwegoda confirmed that relief operations are in full swing with the support of the armed forces. “We are actively helping affected communities and moving residents to safe shelters,” he said, adding that rescue teams are using helicopters and boats to evacuate people stranded by the floods.
Although rains have eased in most parts of the country, northern regions continue to experience showers due to the lingering effects of the cyclone. Low-lying areas, particularly along the banks of the Kelani River near Colombo, have been severely affected. The river overflowed on Friday evening, forcing hundreds to leave their homes and seek temporary shelter.
In response to the crisis, India has sent a planeload of essential supplies to support relief efforts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of life in Sri Lanka and assured that New Delhi stands ready to provide additional aid as the situation unfolds.
Officials warned that the current flood levels are likely to surpass those seen in previous years, including the 2016 floods which killed 71 people nationwide. Sri Lanka has witnessed some of its deadliest flooding this century, with the 2003 floods claiming 254 lives.
As authorities continue to manage the ongoing disaster, rescue operations remain a top priority, with the military and DMC teams working tirelessly to provide relief and evacuate vulnerable populations.
The impact of Cyclone Ditwah highlights the vulnerability of the island nation to extreme weather events and underscores the urgent need for continued disaster preparedness and rapid response measures.
