Cyclone Fina made a fierce impact as it hit Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory, creating significant disruption and damage. The cyclone, which reached category three status, struck late Saturday, November 22, unleashing fierce winds and heavy rainfall across the region. With wind gusts up to 205 kilometers per hour, Fina departed from Darwin on Sunday, November 23.
In the interest of safety, Darwin International Airport remained closed on Sunday while officials worked to ensure it could reopen safely. The severe weather conditions persisted, complicating efforts to restore normal operations. Emergency services cautioned residents to stay clear of downed power lines and refrain from sightseeing due to ongoing hazards.
Darwin, with a population of approximately 140,000, was reminded of the catastrophic Cyclone Tracy of 1974, which left a profound impact on the area. Thankfully, no serious injuries have been reported this time, although numerous homes and infrastructure experienced damage. Citywide power outages were recorded as authorities began to evaluate the full scope of the storm's effects.
Local power and water providers began inspections early on Sunday to pinpoint damaged areas and initiate repairs. Cyclone Fina, classified as a category three storm, has the potential to inflict serious damage on structures, crops, and vegetation, as well as cause widespread power failure.
This cyclone follows previous weather events in Australia, such as ex-tropical cyclone Alfred, which affected Queensland in March, leading to school closures and power interruptions. Authorities are vigilantly monitoring developments, emphasizing public safety and the quick restoration of services in Darwin.
