David Szalay, a British-Hungarian author, has clinched the Booker Prize 2025 for his work, Flesh. This novel offers a deep, minimalist look into the life of an everyday man, exploring the unexpressed feelings that shape our humanity.
The 51-year-old writer bested five other contenders, which included notable names like Andrew Miller and Kiran Desai, earning the esteemed literary accolade. Alongside the recognition, Szalay receives a prize of £50,000 (around $66,000).
Flesh narrates the journey of Istvan, a reserved, working-class Hungarian man as he experiences significant life changes — from youthful love to immigrant challenges in the UK, culminating in his later existence within London’s elite. Szalay has described the book as a contemplation of “life as a tangible experience, concerning the essence of being a body in the world.”
The judging panel, led by acclaimed Irish author Roddy Doyle, commended the slightly woven narrative strength and emotional resonance of the book. Doyle remarked, “Flesh is centered around living — and the peculiarities of that existence.” He noted, after a five-hour deliberation, the decision to honor Szalay was unanimous.
He elaborated, stating, “We appreciated the succinctness of the prose. A wealth of understanding is conveyed without direct exposition. Witnessing Istvan evolve over time provided insights into both him and ourselves.”
Szalay’s storytelling technique invites readers to engage imaginatively, leaving certain aspects of Istvan’s life, such as imprisonment and wartime service, unarticulated. This approach has been deemed both provocative and refreshing, albeit challenging for some.
Raised in Canada and the UK, and currently residing in Vienna, Szalay stands as a notable figure in modern literature. He was a Booker Prize finalist in 2016 with his collection All That Man Is, which delved into masculinity through nine connected tales.
Other candidates considered for the 2025 Booker Prize included Susan Choi (Flashlight), Katie Kitamura (Audition), and Ben Markovits (The Rest of Our Lives), while Andrew Miller’s The Land in Winter and Kiran Desai’s The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny were seen as strong contenders prior to the ceremony.
Established in 1969, the Booker Prize remains one of the most prestigious awards in international literature, with former winners like Salman Rushdie, Arundhati Roy, and Ian McEwan. The previous year’s award went to Samantha Harvey for her novel Orbital.
With the recognition for Flesh, David Szalay joins a distinguished cadre of literary luminaries. His subtle yet impactful storytelling serves as a poignant reminder that the deepest narratives often reside within the undisclosed layers of ordinary life.
