Death Toll from 7.8 Magnitude Philippine Earthquake Reaches 35

Death Toll from 7.8 Magnitude Philippine Earthquake Reaches 35

Post by : Shweta

A catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Philippines on Monday, with confirmed fatalities rising to 35 and injuring upwards of 200 individuals. Most casualties stemmed from collapsing structures, as well as falling debris and landslides. Initial tsunami alerts were issued for several countries but were later rescinded after authorities deemed the threat over.

The quake struck at 7:37 a.m. local time, positioned offshore near Mindanao, the Philippines' second-largest island. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 33 km, situated southwest of Maasim in Sarangani province.

Significant damage was reported, particularly in General Santos city, where numerous low-rise buildings collapsed or faced severe structural damage. Rescue teams remain active, with fears that additional victims may be trapped beneath the rubble of damaged facilities, including supermarkets, warehouses, and schools. Reports indicate that at least four individuals remain missing.

In Sarangani province, a landslide in Glan took the lives of 13 residents. Provincial disaster officials reported four more fatalities in the area, with additional deaths noted in South Cotabato, Davao Occidental, and Balut Island, where falling debris led to more casualties.

This earthquake marks the strongest tremor of the year in the Philippines. Seismology experts have documented over 200 aftershocks, advising against re-entry into damaged structures until thorough inspections have been conducted. Authorities have cautioned that compromised buildings could collapse as seismic activity persists.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has activated both national and local disaster response agencies. Classes in affected regions are suspended while emergency teams assess damage and assist displaced residents. The president promised complete governmental support for impacted communities.

Transportation and daily activities have been disrupted as General Santos International Airport halted its operations, leading to the cancellation of 17 domestic flights. Damage evaluations are in progress across various provinces, in efforts to restore normalcy.

The strong tremor was also felt in Malaysia's Sabah state, with tsunami waves recorded across the region. Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat provinces reported waves of approximately one meter, while Indonesia’s Sulawesi island saw waves measuring 83 centimeters. Tsunami alerts were ultimately lifted once the threat was assessed to have receded.

Some minor coastal damage occurred; in Zamboanga del Sur province, structures on stilts were jeopardized by rising sea waves triggered by the earthquake. Authorities are closely monitoring at-risk coastal communities for additional hazards.

International allies have voiced their support as rescue and relief efforts continue. The United States is coordinating with Manila and stands ready to assist, while countries like France, Japan, and New Zealand have offered their help to the Philippine government.

Situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines frequently faces natural disasters including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, compounded by approximately 20 tropical storms and typhoons annually.

Ongoing search and rescue missions are crucial as authorities gauge the full extent of the devastation. As emergency teams access remote areas and evaluate collapsed structures, the casualty count may increase. Recovery initiatives are expected to extend into the coming days as affected individuals begin the rebuilding process.
