Around midday, a fire erupted at Gabriel House, where about 70 elderly or disabled residents lived. Firefighters arrived quickly—nearly 50 crew members rushed to the scene—to control the blaze and help residents escape. Despite their efforts, several residents died on site.
A fire department spokesperson, Jake Wark, shared the sad news: “We are withholding the exact number pending updates on some patients’ conditions. This is a terrible tragedy for the City of Fall River and the families involved. Our hearts are with them this morning.”
Some residents were able to leave the building with firefighters’ help. Those rescued were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from mild smoke inhalation to more serious conditions.
Firefighters and Residents at Risk
Five firefighters were also injured while battling the flames. Fortunately, their injuries are not life-threatening, Wark said.
Sadly, several residents passed away inside the building. Emergency personnel are working to determine the full number, and officials decided not to release it until they can confirm the conditions of all residents and reach their families.
The Rescue Operation
When the alarm went off, firefighters arrived immediately. They used ladders, hoses, and other equipment to reach windows and bring residents to safety.
Some elderly and disabled residents could not move on their own. Fire crews carried them out carefully, while medical staff waited outside to provide first aid.
Inside, thick smoke and intense heat made the rescue difficult. Still, firefighters continued their efforts until the fire was finally brought under control.
Medical Response
Local hospitals reported a surge of patients after the fire. Ambulances transported injured residents and firefighters to emergency rooms. Medical teams were prepared in advance, expecting multiple casualties.
Doctors and nurses treated residents for breathing issues from smoke inhalation, burns, and shock. The injured firefighters were treated and released from the hospital within hours.
Support staff at the hospitals worked around the clock helping family members who rushed to be with their loved ones.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are now trying to figure out how the fire started. Investigators were called in immediately after the blaze was extinguished.
They are examining the scene, looking at wiring, electrical outlets, kitchen equipment, heating systems, and any possible signs of arson or accidental ignition.
Once their work is finished, they will compile a report explaining the cause of the fire and offering safety suggestions to prevent similar events in the future.
Gabriel House: A Home for Those Who Need Extra Care
Gabriel House is an assisted living center where older adults and people with disabilities live together and receive help with daily tasks such as eating, bathing, and taking medicine.
Its goal is to give residents as much independence as possible, while ensuring their safety and well-being. Caregivers monitor residents all day, and medication is provided as needed.
Because some residents use wheelchairs, walkers, or need help walking, they often find it hard to escape quickly. This made the firefighters’ job even more important and challenging.
Support from the Local Community
Local families and neighbors have come forward to help. Nearby schools, churches, and community groups are offering food, clothing, and emotional support to those in need.
The city has set up a hotline to help family members locate residents, check their status, and receive updates.
Counselors and social workers are also available for residents, staff, and family members who are struggling with fear, grief, or shock.
Emergency Plans Under Review
Governments and safety officials say this tragic accident highlights the importance of emergency planning in care homes and assisted living facilities.
They are calling for improvements such as:
As doctors and families care for the injured, the community mourns those who died. City officials, care providers, and emergency workers are working to figure out how to prevent another tragedy like this.
More details are expected in the coming days, including the final count of casualties and updates on the cause of the fire.
No matter the findings, this event has shown the strength and care of first responders, hospital staff, and community volunteers who came together when disaster struck.
The overnight fire at Gabriel House in Fall River is a heartbreaking moment for the families, the city, and the entire community. It shines a light on how important it is to keep assisted living centers safe and well-prepared for emergencies. As more information becomes available, officials and the public will learn the causes and how to better protect vulnerable people. Until then, everyone waits, mourns, and hopes for strength and healing.
