The Koh-i-Noor diamond is once again at the center of a heated discussion following a call from Zohran Mamdani for King Charles III to return the gem to India. His remarks have reignited the long-standing discourse regarding the rightful ownership of this iconic diamond.
Known as the “Mountain of Light,” the Koh-i-Noor is a stunning 105.6-carat diamond with a rich and complex history. Originating from the Golconda region of what is now Telangana, it is believed to have been unearthed in the 13th century. Throughout the ages, it has belonged to a number of influential leaders, including Mughal emperors, Persian monarchs, Afghan chiefs, and Sikh royalty.
The diamond eventually found its way to Maharaja Duleep Singh, the final sovereign of the Sikh Empire. Following the annexation of Punjab by the British in 1849, the diamond was transferred to Queen Victoria under the Treaty of Lahore and has since been a part of the British Crown Jewels.
Throughout history, the Koh-i-Noor has adorned royal crowns of British queens and is currently housed at the Tower of London. Interestingly, it was not included in the latest coronation ceremonies, where Queen Camilla opted for another crown.
India has repeatedly asserted that the Koh-i-Noor diamond is integral to its cultural and historical identity. Many argue that it was appropriated during the colonial era and should rightfully be returned. The Archaeological Survey of India has also indicated that the diamond was “surrendered” under dubious historical circumstances, further intensifying the debate.
With Mamdani's recent comments, the conversation surrounding the Koh-i-Noor diamond is revived once more. Beyond its material worth, it serves as a potent symbol of heritage and a topic of global concern.
