The Delhi High Court on Wednesday heard the ongoing inheritance case involving the late businessman Sunjay Kapur. His widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, asked the court to keep details of his assets confidential.
Priya said she would share the list of assets only if Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, and his children from his marriage with actress Karisma Kapoor—Samaira and Kiaan—signed Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). She also offered to submit the details in a sealed envelope to prevent leaks or misuse of financial information.
As another option, Priya suggested creating a “Confidentiality Club,” where only a limited number of lawyers and representatives could view the documents. However, Justice Jyoti Singh stated that the case could not be conducted fully in secrecy and that all parties must have access to respond properly.
The request for secrecy comes after a September 10 order that directed Priya to file a complete account of Sunjay Kapur’s assets and liabilities, along with the will that was recently found at the Taj Hotel. The will’s timing has been questioned by Senior Advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, who is representing Sunjay’s children, calling it “deeply suspicious.”
Rani Kapur, represented by Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, said her rights under the family trust were affected after Priya’s marriage. She also expressed concern that she never received a copy of the will despite asking many times. Her lawyer, Senior Advocate Amit Sibal, opposed the NDA demand, saying all beneficiaries must have full access to the documents to confirm their authenticity.
The legal team for Samaira and Kiaan Kapoor added that inheritance matters are civil cases, and transparency is necessary for all parties. They argued that privacy cannot come at the cost of fairness.
The court adjourned the case to the next day without making a final decision on whether Priya could keep details of the estate private. Sunjay Kapur’s estate is estimated to be worth ₹30,000 crore, making this case one of the most high-profile family disputes in recent years.
