A devastating fire at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area claimed the lives of at least 21 people and left several others injured, making it one of the deadliest fire incidents reported in the national capital in recent years. Rescue teams worked for hours to evacuate guests and control the blaze that rapidly engulfed the building.
The fire reportedly started around 8:50 a.m. in a restaurant located in the basement of the five-storey Flourish Stay hotel. According to officials, the flames quickly spread through the structure and later affected a neighboring property, creating a complex emergency situation in the densely populated Hauz Rani locality.
Authorities confirmed that among the deceased were both Indian and foreign nationals. Preliminary information indicated that many of the foreign victims were from African countries and Bangladesh and had been staying in Delhi for medical treatment. Several guests were reportedly asleep when the fire broke out, leaving little time to react.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as trapped occupants attempted to escape the smoke-filled building. Some people reportedly broke windows and jumped from upper floors while local residents and rescue workers placed mattresses on the ground to reduce the impact of falls. Videos from the scene showed desperate efforts by guests to save themselves before firefighters arrived.
A preliminary investigation has raised serious concerns regarding fire safety compliance at the hotel. Officials indicated that the property was allegedly operating far beyond the capacity permitted under its license and did not possess a valid fire safety clearance certificate. Fire department officials also noted that the building reportedly had only a single entry and exit point, limited ventilation, and basement accommodations that complicated rescue operations.
The Delhi Fire Service deployed 17 fire tenders along with multiple emergency response units. Firefighters were forced to cut through a shutter to access the basement area, where several people were trapped. In total, 37 individuals were rescued during the large-scale operation. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the blaze and whether safety regulations were violated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced financial assistance for those affected. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also expressed grief over the tragedy and assured that all necessary medical and relief support would be provided. Officials have promised a thorough investigation into the incident as questions grow over compliance with fire safety regulations in commercial establishments across the city.
