Denmark Launches Night Watch To Track Trump Remarks Amid Greenland Row

Denmark Launches Night Watch To Track Trump Remarks Amid Greenland Row

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Denmark has introduced a unique initiative within its foreign ministry to monitor the activities and statements of former US President Donald Trump, a move reflecting the ongoing sensitivity over Greenland. Known as the “night watch,” the program is designed to keep track of Trump’s public remarks, social media posts, and other movements during Copenhagen’s nighttime hours. Each day, starting at 5 pm local time, staff begin monitoring his activities, compiling a report by 7 am summarizing key developments. These reports are then shared with relevant government departments and officials to ensure timely awareness and response.

This initiative was prompted by tensions between Denmark and the United States following Trump’s repeated interest in Greenland, including his 2019 suggestion that the Arctic island could become part of the US. Denmark’s authorities, however, have consistently rejected any notion of US annexation, emphasizing that the decision lies with the Greenlandic people. Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen reaffirmed that Greenland’s future would be determined independently by its residents.

The night watch system was designed to reduce the burden on individual officials who would otherwise need to constantly monitor US news and social media for developments. Politiken reported that the collective approach helps the Danish government stay updated on Trump’s activities, especially given the challenging time difference between Copenhagen and Washington, which complicates real-time monitoring.

Experts say the initiative highlights how Danish diplomacy and the civil service have adapted to the unpredictability of US political leadership under Trump. Jacob Kaarsbo, former chief analyst at the Danish Defence Intelligence Agency, commented that Denmark’s view of the United States as a reliable ally has changed, noting that alliances must be based on shared values and a common understanding of threats. He added that Trump’s approach diverged from these principles, creating uncertainty in European-US relations.

Earlier this year, Trump again publicly expressed his interest in Greenland, stating support for the island’s right to self-determination while suggesting it could join the United States if its people wished. This renewed attention further underscored the need for Denmark’s proactive monitoring strategy.

The night watch initiative demonstrates Denmark’s commitment to staying ahead of international developments, ensuring that government decisions and diplomatic actions are informed by accurate and timely intelligence regarding high-profile foreign leaders. It also illustrates the broader impact of global political dynamics on national security and foreign policy planning.

This careful monitoring reflects how even established alliances must adapt when unexpected political actions create new challenges, and Denmark’s night watch program stands as a clear example of a government responding strategically to global uncertainties.
