The Denver Nuggets clinched a vital win on Friday night, narrowly defeating the Houston Rockets 112-109 during an exciting NBA Cup matchup. Hosted in Houston, the Rockets looked to extend their five-game winning streak. However, Denver's phenomenal duo, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, delivered stellar performances that turned the tide in their favor.
Jokic reaffirmed his status as one of the league's most formidable players, concluding the game with 34 points and 10 rebounds, thereby securing another impressive double-double. Murray also made significant contributions, netting 26 points and notching 10 assists, providing Denver with the necessary rhythm and balance throughout the contest. Their synergy was crucial in halting Houston's thrust.
The Nuggets opened the game with a solid defensive strategy, while Houston struggled offensively, connecting on just 6-of-24 shots in the first quarter. Denver capitalized on the Rockets’ mistakes, leading 25-12 after the first 12 minutes and building an early cushion.
Yet, the Rockets surged back in the second quarter, spurred by Reed Sheppard’s explosive bench performance. Sheppard scored 18 points during this period, injecting energy into Houston’s efforts and helping them to a 49-46 halftime lead, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Refusing to succumb to pressure, Jokic dominated the third quarter, pouring in 18 points with remarkable shooting accuracy. His influential presence at both ends of the court allowed the Nuggets to regain their lead and stretch the gap to 12 points.
Houston made one last push in the final quarter, closing the gap to 101-99. In response, Murray showcased his poise, hitting critical shots in the closing moments that maintained Denver’s edge. His contributions proved essential for the Nuggets.
Jabari Smith Jr. tried to keep Houston’s hopes alive with a three-pointer in the closing seconds, narrowing the score to 111-109. However, Jokic sealed the game by sinking two free throws with just 2.7 seconds remaining, giving Denver the cushion they needed as they withstood a last-ditch 43-foot heave from Houston.
Smith concluded the match with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Sheppard totaled 27 points. Despite their efforts, Houston struggled overall, particularly with Kevin Durant unable to find his shooting rhythm with just 13 points. Alperen Sengun also faced challenges, contributing to the Rockets’ difficulties.
For Denver, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Bruce Brown provided significant support from the bench with a combined 22 points. This win pushes the Nuggets’ record to 2-1 in West Group C of the NBA Cup, while the NBA Cup defeat drops the Rockets to 1-2.
This contest highlighted the value of experience and teamwork, with Denver maintaining composure under stress and relying on their star players, while Houston battled hard but fell short on key plays. With this victory, Denver keeps their championship hopes alive and demonstrates their consistent prowess in group stage performance.
