Desert Vipers Triumph Over Capitals in Season Opener

Desert Vipers Triumph Over Capitals in Season Opener

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Dubai: The Desert Vipers launched the DP World ILT20 season in spectacular fashion on Tuesday, breaking their six-match losing streak against the reigning champions, Dubai Capitals, with an exhilarating four-wicket win at Dubai International Stadium.

After opting to bowl, the Vipers showcased an impressive bowling display, limiting the Capitals to a score of 150 for 8. Key performances from Noor Ahmad, David Payne, and Khuzaima Tanveer, each taking two wickets, kept the defending champions in check.

While chasing a modest target, the Vipers were bolstered by a well-constructed half-century from Andries Gous. Together with Fakhar Zaman, Gous set the pace with a brisk 50-run opening partnership. Though Zaman departed for 26, Gous continued to press forward, reaching his fifty off just 32 balls, accompanied by six fours and two sixes. Despite a few quick dismissals causing momentary tension, Dan Lawrence and Khuzaima Tanveer secured the victory in 19 overs, marking the 21st win in the tournament for the Vipers—an all-time high for any franchise.

The Capitals faced challenges from the outset, slumping to 32 for 3 in the powerplay. While Rovman Powell scored 39 and Mohammad Nabi added 29, it was not enough to achieve a competitive total.

This match also marked the official debut for the newly formed squads, finalized during the inaugural player auction in October. The six franchises displayed well-rounded teams, combining international stars with local and associate nation talent, including players from Saudi Arabia, in accordance with the league's composition rules.

With their confident display, the Desert Vipers have set a promising tone for the season, indicating their ambition to contend for the championship once again.
