Tottenham Hotspur left-back Destiny Udogie, 22, has received public backing from the club after an alleged firearms threat in a north London neighbourhood in September. The Italy international, who has been an important presence for Spurs this season, was reportedly the target of a frightening late-night incident that has prompted concerns about player safety off the pitch.
Police say the episode occurred late on 6 September when officers responded to reports that a man in his 20s — later identified as Udogie — had been threatened with a gun. During the same inquiry, detectives learned a second man in his 20s had been reportedly blackmailed and threatened by the same suspect. No one was physically harmed in either event, authorities added.
A 31-year-old was detained on 8 September on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent, blackmail and driving without a licence. He has been released on bail while inquiries continue, with police stressing the investigation remains active.
Tottenham has confirmed it is supporting Udogie and his family. A club representative said on Tuesday that the organisation has been assisting the player and his relatives since the matter emerged and will continue to do so, but declined to expand further because of the legal process.
Despite the unfolding investigation, Udogie featured in Tottenham’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen on Tuesday, demonstrating composure and focus for the team amid personal disruption.
The episode underlines security challenges faced by high-profile athletes who live in well-known areas. Clubs increasingly place emphasis on safeguarding, welfare and mental-health resources for players in similar situations.
Udogie, signed from Udinese, has impressed for both Spurs and the Italian national side with his forward-thinking full-back play. The incident has not appeared to alter his place in the starting XI under the club’s management.
Police have urged anyone with information relevant to the case to come forward, and Tottenham said it is cooperating with law enforcement to help ensure the safety of players and staff.
