DEWA's Innovative HQ Takes Center Stage in Dubai

DEWA's Innovative HQ Takes Center Stage in Dubai

Post by : Badri Ariffin

His Highness Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum officially launched the ‘Al Shera’a’, the newest headquarters for the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) situated in Al Jaddaf, signifying a pivotal advancement in Dubai’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

This iconic structure is acclaimed as the tallest, largest, and smartest net-positive government facility globally. It embodies Dubai's strategic vision of integrating sustainability into the fabric of daily life through cutting-edge technology and renewable energy.

During the inauguration, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized Dubai's ongoing investment in state-of-the-art infrastructure and talent, further solidifying its status as a leader in sustainability and future-oriented development. He praised Al Shera’a as a benchmark for smart technology and environmental stewardship.

The inaugural event hosted several senior UAE officials, including Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Mohammed was greeted by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer and other DEWA representatives before touring an exhibition that showcased the authority’s legacy, achievements, and forward-looking initiatives.

During the visit, Al Tayer introduced Al Shera’a as a groundbreaking example of smart, sustainable government architecture. The main office maximizes the potential of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data analytics to foster a highly adaptive workspace.

The structure is equipped with over 110,000 smart sensors that continuously track environmental and operational metrics. It also boasts more than 1,500 wireless access points and 3,200 network devices, executing approximately 1.9 million automated control commands daily to enhance operational efficacy.

All the building's systems are interconnected through the ‘Al Shera’a’ smart application, which governs around 100 independent functions, including smart parking, climate control, lighting, and mobility services.

With a total clean energy generation potential of 5 megawatts, the headquarters is supported by two sophisticated solar systems. One incorporates photovoltaic panels within the building's facade, while the other features roughly 8,400 solar panels strategically positioned across the rooftops. Robotic technologies are employed for solar panel cleaning to sustain peak efficiency.

Al Shera’a is conveniently connected to Al Jaddaf Metro Station via a dedicated pedestrian bridge, promoting public transport usage and minimizing carbon emissions.

Drawing inspiration from traditional Emirati design, the building seamlessly merges heritage with modernity. The name ‘Al Shera’a’, meaning ‘sail’ in Arabic, symbolizes progress, openness, and movement.

Spanning 19 floors, along with a ground level and basements, the total built-up area exceeds two million square feet. The building aims to achieve LEED Platinum and WELL Gold certifications, illustrating high benchmarks in sustainability and employee wellness.

Al Shera’a also accommodates training rooms, conference halls, innovation centers, exhibition venues, sports facilities, and a nursery for employees’ children, fostering a modern, integrated workplace that emphasizes comfort, productivity, and quality of life.
