Hassyan Desalination Plant by DEWA Approaches 90% Completion Ahead of Schedule

Hassyan Desalination Plant by DEWA Approaches 90% Completion Ahead of Schedule

Post by : Badri Ariffin

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), visited the Hassyan seawater desalination plant, where construction is about 90% complete. This project is on track for total operational capability by the first quarter of 2027.

With an investment of AED 3.377 billion, the Hassyan facility stands as one of the largest reverse-osmosis (RO) water production plants worldwide. This marks DEWA’s first Independent Water Producer (IWP) initiative, significantly contributing to Dubai's water infrastructure evolution.

Accompanying Al Tayer were notable figures such as Mohammad Abunayyan, Chairman of ACWA Power; Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation; and Waleed bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development at DEWA, alongside members of Hassyan Water Company A and other senior officials.

Al Tayer stressed that the project embodies the vision and strategic initiatives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The initiative aims to create a sophisticated, integrated energy and water network that meets Dubai's expanding population and water requirements, in line with the UAE’s water security and sustainability objectives.

During this inspection, representatives from Hassyan Water Company A delivered comprehensive presentations detailing the plant’s essential role in bolstering Dubai's smart desalination efforts and the Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy 2030.

Al Tayer also noted DEWA's dedication to implementing energy-efficient RO desalination technologies, which significantly lower energy consumption compared to outdated distillation processes. Moreover, DEWA intends to increase its desalination capabilities by 240 million imperial gallons daily by 2030 through seawater reverse-osmosis techniques while ensuring that 100% of the desalinated water is produced using clean energy and waste heat, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable practices.
