Hatta: A Beacon of Sustainability Driven by DEWA

Hatta: A Beacon of Sustainability Driven by DEWA

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Nestled in the Hajar Mountains, Hatta, a treasure of the UAE, is becoming a renowned model of synergy between nature and contemporary living. Guided by the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, DEWA plays a pivotal role in shaping Hatta into a center for sustainable tourism and innovation, merging the preservation of heritage with advanced technologies.

Heritage Revitalization Through Modern Innovation

DEWA’s projects in Hatta prioritize the enhancement of local tourism without compromising environmental quality. By utilizing sustainable materials and innovative technologies suited to Hatta's specific geology, each endeavor complies with international environmental standards. Notable achievements include the Hatta Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Power Station, the first of its kind in the GCC that can deliver full grid power within a mere 90 seconds.

The authority has further improved Hatta's water infrastructure with a desalinated water reservoir holding 30 million imperial gallons and microfiltration units capable of processing three million gallons daily. The establishment of strategic water interconnections with neighboring emirates and the Shams Dubai initiative enhances resource sustainability.

The Fusion of Tourism and Sustainability

Hatta’s status as a prime tourist spot is also enhanced through developments like the Hatta Sustainable Waterfalls. This site, situated along the upper dam slope of the hydroelectric facility, boasts the world’s largest mosaic mural celebrating the UAE’s Founding Fathers, fusing art with eco-friendly design to showcase Hatta’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Al Rayan Mosque: An Exemplary Green Structure

The Al Rayan Mosque exemplifies sustainable architecture and urban design. Achieving three global records, it became the first mosque globally to earn LEED Zero Carbon certification in 2025, offsetting 175% of its yearly carbon emissions. Solar panels over parking and ablution areas provide more than 150% of the mosque’s energy needs, with excess energy supplied to the grid. The mosque is also equipped with EV charging stations, sophisticated water treatment systems, advanced air purification, and accessibility features, blending practicality with ecological mindfulness.

A Template for Future Development

Hatta’s evolution showcases a landscape where development can harmoniously exist alongside nature. Through groundbreaking projects in energy, water, and tourism, DEWA sets a global standard for sustainable urban development while retaining Hatta’s unique charm.
