Novak Djokovic said he was surprised by comments from Italian tennis chief Angelo Binaghi suggesting the Serb would take part in the 2025 ATP Finals. Competing this week at the Hellenic Championship in Athens, Djokovic stressed he has not reached any conclusion and will outline his plans only after the current tournament ends.
Following a straight-sets win over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in his opening match, Djokovic pushed back on the speculation. He said the information did not come from him or his team and that any decision will be made at the tournament’s conclusion. He also reflected on the contest, noting that Tabilo had beaten him on clay in their two previous meetings this season and last.
The world No. 1 admitted he felt more pressure than usual before the match and leaned on the crowd to lift him. He described the match as a test of composure and energy rather than a routine outing.
When reporters again raised the subject of retirement, Djokovic showed annoyance at the frequency of the question, saying he has earned the right to play as long as he wishes. He cited Stan Wawrinka’s perspective on enjoying competition as a valid approach.
Djokovic added that while retirement has crossed his mind occasionally, it is not a pressing consideration right now. He reaffirmed his intention to continue competing on his own terms — choosing events he wants to play rather than following others’ expectations.
The Hellenic Championship in Athens continues, with Djokovic in good form as he advances. While talk about the ATP Finals persists, the Serb remains concentrated on his performance in Greece before mapping out his next steps on the ATP Tour.
