Milan, Italy – dnata, a worldwide leader in aviation services, has revealed a significant investment of €25 million to construct a state-of-the-art cargo facility at Milan Malpensa Airport through its subsidiary, Airport Handling.
This new facility will cover an area of 10,000 square meters in the Cargo City sector, aimed at processing over 100,000 tonnes of cargo each year. It is designed to accommodate diverse goods, such as perishables, pharmaceuticals, hazardous materials, live animals, aircraft engines, and vehicles.
The initiative follows a competitive bidding process led by SEA Group, which manages Linate and Malpensa airports, and is anticipated to create 200 jobs, reinforcing Milan’s role as a vital European logistics center.
Commitment to Sustainability
This facility emphasizes sustainable design and includes energy-efficient features. Solar panels will harness renewable energy, high-efficiency LED lighting will cut energy consumption, and natural light will be prioritized in the warehouse and office areas. Additionally, infrastructure will cater to low-emission ground operations, demonstrating dnata’s dedication to eco-friendly expansion.
Enhancing Cargo Capacity in Italy
This development allows Airport Handling to emerge as a comprehensive ground services provider in Milan. Currently, the company supports more than 60 airlines and oversees 80,000 flights yearly across the two major airports, while its recent extension into Rome’s Fiumicino Airport highlights its expanding presence in Italy.
dnata’s extensive cargo operations span 90 airports in 16 countries, managing 3.1 million tonnes of cargo in FY 2024–25, marking a 9% increase from last year. This Milan facility aligns with the company's strategy to invest in expanding markets and modern infrastructure to meet the increasing demand for cross-border e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, and perishables.
The state-of-the-art cargo hub is expected to be operational by September 2027, poised to be a key component of Milan's logistics landscape.
