A major fire broke out at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in Bayahibe, a well-known beach destination in the Dominican Republic, forcing the evacuation of nearly 1,700 tourists and staff members. Emergency services responded quickly as thick smoke and flames spread across sections of the resort.
Authorities confirmed that Francesca Valentino, a 46-year-old woman from Italy, lost her life in the incident. The tragedy has shocked visitors and local residents in one of the Caribbean's most popular tourist regions.
Emergency Teams Launch Rescue Operation
Firefighters and emergency crews rushed to the hotel after receiving reports of the blaze. Videos shared on social media showed large clouds of black smoke rising above the coastline while flames consumed parts of the resort's roof structures.
Officials said guests, visitors, and employees were immediately moved to safe areas as emergency teams worked to contain the rapidly spreading fire.
Several People Receive Medical Treatment
According to emergency authorities, three individuals were transported to medical facilities for treatment, while six others received medical assistance at the scene. Those affected included hotel guests and emergency responders involved in the rescue effort.
Authorities stated that swift evacuation procedures helped prevent a greater loss of life despite the scale of the fire.
Roof Materials and Wind Fueled Flames
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire spread quickly because portions of the resort's roof were made from highly flammable palm-based materials. Strong wind conditions further accelerated the spread of the flames across the affected structures.
Emergency officials said firefighters faced challenging conditions while trying to bring the blaze under control.

Guests Relocated to Nearby Hotels
Following the evacuation, affected guests were transferred to nearby accommodation facilities. Authorities confirmed that the neighboring Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace resort, which belongs to the same hotel group, was not damaged by the fire.
Tourism officials coordinated with local authorities to ensure visitors received assistance and alternative lodging arrangements.
Investigation Into Cause Continues
Although the fire has been fully contained, investigators are continuing efforts to determine its exact cause. Authorities are examining the damaged structures and collecting evidence from the site.
Officials have not yet announced whether the fire was caused by an accident, electrical fault, or any other factor.
Tourism Activities Continue Normally
Despite the incident, authorities said tourism activities in Bayahibe and surrounding areas remain operational. Local officials emphasized that the resort fire was an isolated event and that visitors can continue to travel safely throughout the region.
The Dominican Republic remains the Caribbean's leading tourism destination, attracting millions of visitors every year with its beaches, resorts, and coastal attractions.
