A Picasso portrait of his longtime muse Dora Maar has fetched $37 million at a Paris auction, turning heads globally towards the legendary artist's oeuvre. Titled "Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat (Dora Maar)," this painting had been shrouded in secrecy for over eighty years, forming part of his renowned "Woman in a Hat" collection.
Created in July 1943, the artwork depicts Maar adorned with a vibrant floral hat, encapsulating the emotional richness and brilliance of Picasso's style. Dora Maar, both a talented artist and photographer, was Picasso’s partner and muse for nearly seven years, a chapter filled with inspiration coupled with heartbreak. After its acquisition in 1944, the painting remained in private hands until it re-emerged at Drouot auction house, captivating collectors worldwide.
Auctioneer Christophe Lucien expressed that the sale was “a monumental triumph” and a profoundly emotional moment, emphasizing that the artwork symbolizes “a fragment of the love story” between Picasso and Maar. He added, “You can feel the tears within her gaze, reflecting her understanding that Picasso was moving on.” This sentiment amplifies the poignant narrative of their tumultuous relationship.
Art experts have commended the portrait for its excellent conservation and vibrant hues. Picasso expert Agnès Sevestre-Barbé noted that the artwork has maintained all its raw materials, offering viewers a full experience of Picasso’s chromatic brilliance. Previously, its vivid colors were only available through black-and-white photographs, leaving potential bidders unaware of its stunning impact.
Sold for €32,012,397, including buyer's premiums, this Picasso portrait set a record as the highest auction price in France for this year, though still falling short of the staggering prices achieved by other iconic pieces like "Femme à la montre" ($139.4 million) and "Les Femmes d'Alger" ($179.4 million).
The auction was a momentous occasion for collectors and art aficionados alike, providing a rare glimpse into Picasso’s emotional depth and artistic flair, particularly through the lens of his muse Dora Maar. This event highlights the timeless allure of Picasso’s portraits and the universal intrigue surrounding his personal and professional relationships.
