The Dragon Boat Festival was celebrated across mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan on Friday with colorful boat races, lion dances and traditional cultural activities. The festival, which dates back more than 2,000 years, remains one of China's most important cultural celebrations and continues to connect modern generations with ancient traditions.
Thousands of people gathered in cities and towns to participate in events that highlight Chinese heritage, community spirit and culture identity. Families also observed traditional customs at home, including preparing special foods and performing rituals believed to bring good health and protection.
Dragon Boat Races Draw Huge Crowds
Dragon boat racing remained the centerpiece of the celebrations. In Beijing, large crowds gathered along the Grand Canal to watch teams compete in men's, women's and mixed-category races. Organizers expect more than 1,000 athletes and nearly 200,000 spectators to attend events during the festival period.
In Hong Kong, dozens of teams competed in the famous Aberdeen Dragon Boat Race. Participants paddled in synchronization to the sound of drums while spectators cheered from the shoreline.
Traditional Customs Remain Popular
Beyond sporting events, families continued long-standing customs associated with the festival. Many households prepared zongzi, a traditional sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves, which is considered one of the festival's most important foods.
Children were seen wearing colorful bracelets believed to ward off bad luck, while others carried herbal sachets as symbols of protection and good health.

Festival Honors Ancient Poet Qu Yuan
The Dragon Boat Festival is closely linked to Qu Yuan, a patriotic Chinese poet who lived more than two thousand years ago. According to legend, people raced boats in an attempt to save him after he jumped into a river.
They also threw rice into the water to prevent fish from harming his body. Historians believe these traditions later evolved into today's dragon boat races and the preparation of zongzi.
Cultural Performances Add Festive Spirit
Visitors attending festival events enjoyed a variety of cultural performances, including lion dances, martial arts demonstrations and traditional handicraft exhibitions. Organizers said these activities were designed to promote cultural exchange and preserve China's intangible cultural heritage.
Performers from different provinces showcased regional traditions, helping younger generations better understand the country's diverse cultural history.
Ancient Traditions Adapt To Modern Times
Experts say the Dragon Boat Festival has successfully adapted to modern urban lifestyles while preserving its traditional values. Although celebrations today differ from those held centuries ago, the festival continues to emphasize family unity, health, harmony and cultural pride.
Many young people participated in events and shared festival experiences online, demonstrating how ancient customs remain relevant in contemporary Chinese society.
Symbol Of Cultural Confidence
The continued popularity of the Dragon Boat Festival reflects China's strong commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. As millions participate in celebrations each year, the festival remains a powerful symbol of tradition, identity and community spirit.
Officials and cultural experts believe the event will continue to play an important role in connecting future generations with China's rich historical legacy.
