DTE Energy has announced second-quarter earnings that surpassed predictions, primarily due to a robust performance in its energy trading division, compensating for weaker results in its electric and natural gas sectors.
The utility company based in the U.S. Midwest also reiterated its full-year earnings forecast and emphasized its ongoing investments aimed at modernizing the power grid and advancing cleaner energy initiatives.
The company reported an adjusted profit of $1.32 per share for the second quarter, which is higher than the analysts' anticipated average of $1.17 per share.
DTE's energy trading segment significantly contributed, yielding an operating profit of $41 million during the quarter, up from $24 million during the same period last year, thus enhancing overall earnings considerably.
However, despite these positive trading results, DTE's primary utility divisions faced notable challenges.
The electric division, which is the largest revenue source, reported an operating profit of $270 million, marking a 15% decline from the previous year. This drop was linked to increased rate-base expenses, adverse weather conditions, and the timing of tax items.
On the other hand, the natural gas division saw an operating loss of $4 million, contrasting with a $6 million profit the previous year, largely due to reduced demand from warmer weather and rising operational costs.
In the initial half of 2026, DTE reported investments exceeding $2.6 billion in its utility services.
These funds are intended to enhance electric and natural gas infrastructure, ensure service reliability during severe weather, and facilitate the transition to sustainable energy solutions.
DTE Energy maintained its forecast for full-year operating earnings, expecting between $7.59 and $7.73 per share, reflecting strong confidence in its strategic approach despite the pressures on its regulated utility sectors.
Currently, DTE Energy serves approximately 2.3 million electricity customers and about 1.4 million natural gas customers throughout Michigan.
