Apology Issued by Dubai Authorities Following Erroneous Missile Alert

Apology Issued by Dubai Authorities Following Erroneous Missile Alert

Post by : Badri Ariffin

On Friday, Dubai residents received a shock when an emergency mobile alert warned of an incoming missile. This alarming notification was swiftly followed by an all-clear message as authorities urged the public to ignore the prior alert.

As reported by the Associated Press, the missile alert appeared on mobile devices, but officials initially did not clarify the reason for the warning. Shortly thereafter, an all-clear notification was dispatched, accompanied by instructions for residents to dismiss the earlier message.

This unexpected alert caught many off guard, marking the first missile warning sent in recent weeks amid heightened diplomatic activity between the United States and Iran.

Technical Error Confirmed by Authorities

Later on Friday, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) of the UAE confirmed that the false alert was due to a technical issue within the nation’s early warning system.

In a statement released on X, the authority expressed regret over the incident, stating, "The National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and allied agencies apologise for this unintended technical malfunction."

The statement continued to specify that the "sudden technical anomaly in the early warning system" has been addressed and rectified.

False Alert Coincides with Regional Tensions

The erroneous alert came just a day after Iran executed a drone strike against the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel, Ever Lovely, near Oman’s coastline.

While no official link was established between the two incidents, the coincidence raised alarm among the public.

Continued Diplomatic Engagements

In the wake of the alert, UAE officials announced that Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan engaged in a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

During this discussion, Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the importance of adhering fully to the interim agreement between Iran and the United States.

The statement reiterated, "It is through serious diplomacy and responsible discussion that we can effectively tackle all regional and international challenges."

Marco Rubio Visits UAE Amid Regional Diplomacy

This incident coincided with a regional diplomatic mission involving the United States. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in Abu Dhabi this week, part of a Gulf tour aimed at reassuring nations about ongoing peace discussions with Iran. Authorities have since confirmed that the technical flaws responsible for the false missile alert have been resolved and the emergency warning system is back to normal operation.

What triggered the missile alert in Dubai?

The UAE authorities attributed the emergency alert to an accidental technical issue in the country’s early warning system.

Was there any genuine missile threat to Dubai?

No, authorities communicated an all-clear shortly after and instructed residents to ignore the initial alert.

What response did UAE officials provide regarding the false alarm?

NCEMA apologized and confirmed the technical issue had been fixed.

Did the alert occur amid regional tensions?

Yes, it came the day following Iran’s drone attack on the cargo ship Ever Lovely near Oman.
