Dubai Police have ramped up enforcement actions targeting young individuals who recklessly operate electric bikes on designated walking and cycling paths, following numerous reports of e-bikes traveling at speeds exceeding 100 kmph.
During a focused week of operations in locations such as Nad Al Sheba, officers seized 101 electric bikes and placed 130 fines on offenders, predominantly teenagers. Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, highlighted that some e-bikes had been illegally modified to enhance their speed, presenting significant dangers to pedestrians, other road users, and the riders themselves.
“E-bikes are intended for leisure and should not be utilized on sports tracks,” he remarked, emphasizing the threats posed by unregulated riding practices.
Legal repercussions have been initiated against the riders, and parents of underage offenders have been called in to educate them on the risks associated with unsupervised riding. Dubai Police have urged families to instruct their children on the importance of using safety gear, adhering to traffic regulations, and riding exclusively on designated paths.
Under UAE traffic legislation, electric scooters and bikes are limited to a maximum speed of 20 kmph and can only be operated on defined routes with appropriate permits from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Violating these rules results in fines of AED 300 for riding on roads where the speed limit exceeds 60 kmph, AED 200 for operating without a permit, and AED 200 for parking in unauthorized zones or impeding traffic.
This enforcement action forms part of Dubai Police's ongoing commitment to safeguarding public well-being and reducing incidents linked to reckless e-bike riding. Authorities have reiterated the necessity for safe riding practices and compliance with traffic rules to ensure the safety of both riders and pedestrians.
